An Introduction to CHOGM 2022
Near the end of June, leaders from Commonwealth countries will descend on Kigali, Rwanda for the latest Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting. Known as CHOGM, this important meeting usually takes place every two years, however, due to the impacts of coronavirus it has been four years since the last CHOGM meeting which was held in London, United Kingdom in 2018. Due to this and the ever changing nature of the world there is much anticipation surrounding the meeting.
What is CHOGM?
CHOGM is an event that usually takes place every two years. At the event, leaders from every Commonwealth country come together to "reaffirm their common values and agree actions and policies to improve the lives of all their citizens."
What is the Theme for CHOGM 2022?
Each CHOGM event has a specific theme that becomes the focus of discussions.
The theme for CHOGM 2022 is "Delivering a Common Future: Connecting, Innovating, Transforming".
When and Where is CHOGM Taking Place?
CHOGM is taking place between the 20th and 25th June 2022 in Kigali, Rwanda.
It's not yet clear whether aspects of CHOGM will take place virtually or enable virtual attendance due to Covid-19. However, a "livestream" place holder is now showing on the official CHOGM website so we expect some aspects to be available online.
What Happens at CHOGM?
Like COP26, CHOGM will see leaders from the 54 nations of the Commonwealth come together across a series of meetings. It is an opportunity for multilateral cooperation to be reinforced, new opportunities to be explored and common challenges to be tackled.
However, alongside the meetings that Heads of Government have are four other forums where a mix of youth and gender activists, business leaders, and civil society representatives can meet to discuss areas of importance.
What Are The Forums at CHOGM 2022?
Each CHOGM includes four forums where youth and gender activists, business leaders, and civil society representatives can get together to tackle issues found throughout the Commonwealth. The four forums are:
The Commonwealth Youth Forum
The Commonwealth Women's Forum
The Commonwealth People's Forum
The Commonwealth Business Forum

Is Climate Change Going To Be Discussed at CHOGM 2022?
Many issues will be discussed at CHOGM and the impacts of climate change will certainly be one of them. Climate change is already causing widespread damage around multiple different Commonwealth countries so it will be one item on the agenda, following progress made on such issues at COP26.
