COP28 Upates!

Our CHEC Delegates have been busy speaking at and attending events around the Blue and Green Zones this week! Here are a few highlights from the last several days from CHEC Governing Board Member and COP28 Delegate Isaac Aboah:

Youth Pavillion

At the Youth Pavillion, The Ban-Ki Moon Centre for Global Citizens hosted a youth-led panel of climate advocacy and innovation focused on young people are agricultural value chains through their initiatives. Panelists Germaine Nkunzurwanda and Eliud Rugut, spoke about their intiatives, challenges the faces and how policy and funding should move towards bold initiatives of youth people solving climate challenges. The session ended with the presentation of the EVWA (Elevating the Voices of Women in Agriculture) Champion 2023.

WHO Health Pavillion

At the WHO Health Pavillion, concersstion have been ongoing at the intersection of health and climate, as health is garnering traction as core element of climate intervention. This panel, “Financing Opportunities - Principles and mechanisms to advance climate change and health finances” brought key stakeholders from finance, health and policy to discuss how to advance health infrastructural financing to respond to health issues resulting from climate change. Panel in view included H.E. Prof Muhammad Ali Pate, Coordinating Minister of Health Nigeria, Dr Agnés Soucat, Head of Health and Social Protection Division, Agence Française de Développement (AFD) and Dr Patrick Osewe, Director, Health, Human And Social Development, Asian Development Bank (ADB). Key points highlighted; - Moving fossil fuels subsidies to finance health - Shifting and re-aligning public finance towards health and investments in health - Investing in public health institutions, resilience and health structures.

Session with Climate Justice

Leia Booth from the Climate Justice - Just Transition Donor Collaborative led a training session on the climate Justice map. The map provides funders, regranters, policy makers etc and an insight into organizations in global south who identify as focused on climate Justice and Just Transition. Leia was joined by Umesh Balal Magar, Youth Program Manager at Unify for Water and Climate who shared his story of how working with frontline communities and persons with disability in Nepal.

Global Alliance of Universities in Climate

At the Global Alliance of Universities in Climate, Professor Anthony Leiserowitz from the Yale School of Climate Education gave a talk on “Climate Change in the Global Public Mind.” Professor Leiserowitz diagnosed the layman understanding of Climate Change and its perceptions within the United States through his research. He spoke about how visible health concerns like air pollution, citing India and China, are the lowest hanging fruits to connecting the public to the climate reality.
