Science fiction author Arthur C Clarke once observed, “How inappropriate to call this planet Earth when it is quite clearly Ocean.” Good point, well made. The oceans clearly dominate the world spatially, encompassing around 72 per cent of the surface of the planet.The vast extent of the oceans only tells part of the story, however.
