Norman Stannard grew up in north-east London and trained as a mechanical engineer. After industrial experience with a major UK engineering company, he migrated to New Zealand where he quickly became increasingly involved in professional activities in the engineering community.  At a time of growing awareness of the need for working towards living within the limits of the earth’s ecosystem services in the 1980s and 90s, he was writing in engineering journals about both the need for total quality management in engineering work and the way we all had to work towards a framework for sustainability. He has been active in Engineers for Social Responsibility Inc., an independent group of engineers who consider that being knowledgeable in the field of technology means that they also have a special obligation to the public at large.
