CHEC Publishes 2025 Annual Report: A Year of Global Action on Climate and Sustainability
The Commonwealth Human Ecology Council (CHEC) has published its 2025 Annual Report, offering a detailed account of our activities across the Commonwealth. The report, introduced with a message from Chair Mark Robinson, reflects CHEC's continued focus on climate change, sustainable development, and community-centred human ecology — with particular attention to the 32 Small Island States within the Commonwealth, and preparations for the upcoming CHOGM in Antigua and Barbuda.
We highlight an active year of projects spanning Africa, Asia, and the Pacific. Spotlight projects include the successful installation of a solar power system at Emo Eni Grammar School in Delta State, Nigeria — a partnership with the Glow Initiative for Economic Empowerment that restored computer access for students and created a cohort of trained Student Ambassadors. Also included is a special report from Fiji, where CHEC's Digital Coordinator Kate Martin worked alongside Earth Sisters Fiji to deliver reusable menstrual hygiene products to women in remote highland villages, a project which has since attracted academic research interest from the University of Lancashire. Further projects underway in Uganda, Kenya, Tamil Nadu in India, and across West Africa address food security, agroforestry, women's empowerment, and climate resilience. The report also features CHEC's journal publication Critical Minerals and Rare Earth Elements in the Commonwealth, released in time for COP30.
On the events front, CHEC representatives attended the Commonwealth Day Service at Westminster Abbey, the XXVI Society for Human Ecology Conference in Mons, Belgium, and COP30 in Belém, Brazil — where CHEC hosted a well-attended Blue Zone side event titled An Insider's Blueprint: A Lifetime of Proven Climate Action on the Ground. Youth Adviser Abhiir Bhalla subsequently appeared on BBC World News to share the CHEC perspective on the conference outcomes.
