COP28 Daily Preview: Thursday 30th November

Thursday the 30th of November will be the first day of COP28 with the Opening Ceremony as the major event. As the official schedules won’t be published by the UNFCCC (United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change) until the evenings prior - we will just give a short overview of COP and CHEC’s participation for this preview.

What is COP28?
COP28 is officially the 28th Meeting of the Conference of Parties to the UNFCCC. Over 70,000 delegates (some estimates have over 80,000!) are expected to attend this year’s conference in Dubai, UAE. CHEC has been an accredited member of the UNFCCC since 2021, where we attended our first COP (26) in Glasgow.

Who from CHEC is attending?
CHEC has four members of the Governing Board attending COP28 this year:
CHEC Chair Mark Robinson
CHEC Youth Advisor Abhiir Bhalla
CHEC Governing Board Member Isaac Aboah
CHEC Governing Board Member Fogamomi Niccolo Moeono

CHEC is also excited to announce their partnership with Climate Outreach and CSET Youth for their first ever COP28 Blue Zone Side Event! The event will explore how to foster scalable community-centred solutions for sustainable development and energy transition – particularly through public engagement, youth and local community-driven climate action, holistic capacity building, education and knowledge sharing at the intersection of social change and technological innovation. Read more about the event, including where to attend (if you are accredited for the COP28 Blue Zone) or how to stream for free online on our Events Page. CHEC’s Nicc Moeono will be a panelist during the discussion!

Why is COP28 Important?
A few important topics stakeholders will be working out are the “details of the loss and damage finance facility to help vulnerable communities deal with immediate climate impacts; driving towards a global goal on finance that would help fund developing countries’ efforts in addressing climate change; accelerating both an energy and a just transition; closing the massive emissions gap”.

COP28 is also important because the first ever Global Stocktake will take place in Dubai during the conference. You can watch the below video from UNFCCC about the Global Stocktake:
